Anthony de Mello

Biography

Anthony de Mello was a Jesuit priest, psychotherapist, and spiritual teacher known for his profound teachings on spirituality, meditation, and self-awareness. He was born on September 4, 1931, in Bombay, British India, into a Roman Catholic family. Growing up, de Mello developed a deep interest in spirituality and philosophy, which would shape his life's work.

De Mello later joined the Jesuit order and was ordained a priest in 1961. He went on to obtain a Master's degree in psychology and counseling from Loyola University in Chicago, which provided him with a versatile perspective that he would integrate into his teachings on the intersection of psychology and spirituality.

Throughout his career, de Mello authored several books that have become spiritual classics, such as "Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality" and "The Way to Love." His writings focused on themes such as self-discovery, mindfulness, and the liberation of the mind from societal conditioning and false beliefs.

One of de Mello's most significant contributions to the field of spirituality was his creation of the "Sadhana Institute" in Poona, India, where he conducted spiritual retreats and workshops that attracted people from around the world seeking personal growth and self-awareness.

De Mello's teachings often challenged traditional beliefs and encouraged individuals to question their assumptions about themselves and the world around them. He emphasized the importance of mindfulness, inner freedom, and the power of self-realization as the keys to living a fulfilling and authentic life.

Despite his popularity and influence as a spiritual teacher, de Mello faced criticism from within the Catholic Church for some of his unorthodox views and teachings. In 1998, the Vatican issued a notification asserting that some of his writings contained ideas incompatible with the Catholic faith, leading to the prohibition of his books among Catholics.

Tragically, Anthony de Mello passed away on June 2, 1987, at the age of 56, following a heart attack while conducting a workshop in the United States. His legacy, however, lives on through his writings, lectures, and the countless individuals who have been touched by his profound teachings on awareness and spirituality.

Anthony de Mello's work continues to inspire people around the world to embark on a journey of self-discovery, inner transformation, and liberation from the constraints of the mind. His message of mindfulness, love, and awakening remains as relevant today as it was during his lifetime, making him a timeless figure in the realm of spiritual wisdom.

  • It is a great mystery that though the human heart longs for Truth, in which alone it finds liberation and delight, the first reaction of human beings to Truth is one of hostility and fear!
