Biography

Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, renowned for his contributions to modern architecture and for his humanistic approach to design and architecture. Aalto's work includes a wide range of buildings from libraries, theaters, hospitals, and town halls to private homes and churches. He was a pioneer in his use of materials, especially wood, and in the development of new techniques that allowed for more flexible forms and structures. Aalto's architecture is characterized by its harmony with nature, organic forms, and attention to detail. He was also a co-founder of the Artek furniture company, which brought Finnish design to an international audience. His notable works include the Paimio Sanatorium, Viipuri Library, and Villa Mairea. Aalto's influence extends beyond architecture to furniture, glassware, and lighting design, making him one of the most important figures in 20th-century design and architecture.
